Prix Fixe entrées: freshly shucked oysters and Steak Tartare
The best kind of friendships, are the ones that remain unchanged despite time apart. In my opinion the best restaurants are the same. Bistro Thierry forms part of an old group of restaurants for me that are at the core of the kind of places we love to recommend on Decisive Cravings. Bistro Thierry like so many long standing restaurants in Melbourne are so deserving of their patronage because of their commitment to real hospitality, quality of service and produce, and consistent food every time.
Before I moved away from Melbourne, Bistro Thierry was a favourite for me in terms of a special occasion, or treat lunch or dinner. Since my recent return in April it has proved to be unchanged and in a city where the restaurant movement is ever-changing Bistro Thierry is a comfort. Their food is probably best described in this way as well with comforting, hearty French fare that charges the taste buds and leaves you feeling warm and happy. Think delicious steaks (from $37.50 – $45.50), calamari ($24 entrée, $36 main), French style salads with exquisite dressings (from $10 – $19.50), as well as traditional offerings like Steak Tartare ($27 entrée, $37 main), Duck à l’orange ($41.50), Escargots ($24.50), pan-fried lambs brains ($24) and Boeuf à la Bourguignonne ($37.50).

My main go-to however, is their Prix Fixe lunch. For $36.50 (except for the Bavette Grillèe which is $37.50); you can choose two courses and be supplied with a decent glass of De Bortoli wine (Semillon Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet Merlot). This I assure you, is a very nice way to spend an afternoon, particularly in the colder Melbourne months, and up there in terms of value for money.
If you are looking for a special meal, warm, old school hospitality or you just love French food, Bistro Thierry will become a fast favourite.
