Drum Castle Walled Garden – Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Autumn has come to Aberdeen. As winter slowly approaches we’re doing our best to spend as much time  as we can outdoors. We recently had a particularly memorable visit to the walled garden at Drum Castle. It’s roughly a 30-minute-drive from our home in the city. The garden is set on the castle’s beautiful estate. It was like entering a secret garden, and even the path to get there felt enchanting. Curving like a snake, the path took us past a sprawling pond, partially concealed by weeping willows to a soundtrack of birdsong. Once we arrived at the garden there was a cast iron gate which squeaked when you opened it (very moody), and suddenly there was just colour everywhere. Countless flowers in bloom, bushes and shrubs of varying shades and height, busy bumble bees scrambling for pollen, butterflies drinking nectar. It is extraordinary how gardens can give this effect, open you up to another world, making you feel elsewhere entirely. I have visited a lot of gardens in my time (it’s a hobby) and this one was certainly up there. Planning to visit the area? Then please add the Walled Garden at Drum Estate to your list.
