Event: Rue and Co
by Decisive CravingsYou know you’re in good food company when it’s the first freezing cold night of winter, you’re invited to an event that’s outdoors and its a roaring success. That’s what happened the night that Rue and Co opened its doors – well actually food truck style “windows”.
Rue and Co is Melbourne’s latest pop-up and a collaboration by George Calombaris’ MAdE Establishment Group, Chris Lucas’ Lucas Group and St Ali’s Salvatore Malatesta. The open air space at 80 Collins St serves food and beverages from container restaurants acting as mini versions of Jimmy Grants, St Ali and Chris Lucas’ new venture Kong BBQ.
On opening night earlier this month we were treated to an array of delights from underneath an impressive mural by Roun (the largest in Australia in fact!). Already frequent diners of Jimmy Grants and St Ali we were most excited to see what Chris Lucas had in store from his Korean and Japanese BBQ house.
Noteworthy dishes included Kong’s Tofu Bo Ssam (spicy tofu served in a lettuce cup) and Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi stew with beef brisket and sweet potato), as well as JG’s famous gourmet souvlaki’s and “South Melbourne Market Dim Sims”. We finished the night with St Ali’s delicious interpretation of an Espresso Martini delivered in a bottle inside a paper bag. Love!
Despite it’s outdoor location, this food quarter is destined to be a hit throughout winter, perfect for a casual lunch or a late night snack. Here’s hoping it’s still around in July for MIFF… we’ll definitely be meeting for pre/post movie eats there. (All image credits to Lucas Dawson Photography)
