On arrival at this event we weren’t surprised to see Hophaus staff with trays of drinks waiting to greet us at the door but what was a bit unexpected was the choice of welcome drink – Jagermeister shots or Apple Schnapps!  Ten points for theming!  That said we chose to steer away from the Jager as a start point for the night but the Apple Schnapps was delicious to sip on for something a bit different.

The first thing you notice about this new fixture in the Southgate Precinct is its stunning design.  You wouldn’t expect a grand entrance way through the bright lights of a shopping mall, but the entry to Hophaus itself is spectacular and the fitout by Maddison Architects is super stylish.  These guys are multi-award winners and it’s easy to see why.

Despite the chilly conditions the large outdoor balcony was full at all times with plenty of seating nooks available inside for more private conversations as well as standing room at the huge bar.

The food was delicious.  Some items you’d expect from a Bavarian beer hall and some old favourites came with modern twists.  Stand out dishes included the herbed chicken drumsticks, mini bratwursts and oysters with sauerkraut – and who doesn’t like fried cheese! – but the smell from the rotisserie ensured that there was more to come and the slow-roasted lamb did not disappoint.

The evening’s buzz came to a brief standstill for the official ‘tapping of the keg’ but once that tradition was completed successfully the merriment continued.

This venue covers all bases: after work drinks, pre-footy/soccer beers, leisurely Sunday lunches and weeknight dinners.   And it’s not all beer.  Their cocktail list looks divine – can’t wait to try the Black Forest Espresso and the Honey Badger – and the wine selection offers a wide variety of local and international drops.

Check out their website for regular weekly specials including beer and food combos.

And as they say at Hophaus: MAKE YOUR BELLY HAPPY. WE INVITE YOU.
