(Gelato Messina’s new Fitzroy store in Melbourne)
Established in Sydney in 2002, Gelato Messina is an institution Australia wide. 11 years later they decided to call Melbourne their second home – all we ask is what took them so long?
Is it worth a trip to Messina? For sweet tooths and gelato lovers it is almost worth the trip interstate, but now for Melbournians, we have one less reason to visit Sydney (sorry!)
This is the gelato store of your dreams with over 40 unique flavours. Get acquainted with all the classics like Coffee, Chocolate and Vanilla; sorbets like Lemon, Mango and Coconut&Pandan and then there’s the unique flavours like Bounty (Coconut and Choc Chip), Peanut Butter Pretzel Fudge Brownie and their biggest seller Salted Caramel&White Chocolate.
The Melbourne store is a lot roomier than their main Sydney counterpart in Darlinghurst. Melbourne has a decent seating area with curved benches – a stage seat to watch the gelato being made through their gelatiere window.

We heart 7 Apples (Acland St) and we love Gelatello (Chapel St) but Messina our friends – is the gelato Mecca that we are lucky has to decided to call Australia home.

Take away: Yes! Available in various scoops from $3 – $7. Take home tubs sizes include 500ml ($10), 1 litre ($19) and 1.5 litres ($26).
Must try: The specials – they are always mind blowing, it is hard to imagine where they think of these things! Our favourites are the Boss’ Wife and the Peanut Pretzel Fudge Brownie. The Chocolate Fondant and Coconut Pandan Sorbet are wonderful too. And if you can’t decide you’re in even better luck because Gelato Messina have a $12 tasting plate where you can sample five different flavours!
Notes: Don’t be intimidated by the line, gelato is not a degustation (for most), the linemoves quickly and if you’re lucky you’ll even get a little perch on the benches inside.
